Help Stop Patent Trolls & Save Podcasting as We Know It

Either you are familiar with the term Patent Troll of you’re not. If you’re a fan of podcasts you should pay extra special attention to the lawsuits being issued within the burgeoning podcasting industry as of late. The #1 most downloaded podcast on iTunes is the Adam Carolla Podcast. It’s the first podcast on the chopping block targeted by these trolls.

What’s a Patent Troll?

“A patent troll, also called a patent assertion entity (PAE), is a person or company who enforces patent rights against accused infringers in an attempt to collect licensing fees but does not manufacture products or supply services based upon the patents in question, thus engaging in economic rent-seeking.”

Currently Carolla is being sued for infringing on Personal Audio’s patent 8,112,504 “System for disseminating media content representing episodes in a serialized sequence”. The actual lawsuit claims that the indexing system being used by not only Adam Carolla, but Marc Maron, Doug Benson and even my beloved This American Life.

If the Carolla Podcast falls it will start a domino effect that will end up shutting you’re favorite podcasts down one by one. It’s a hard law to fight because they actually hold these patents. It’s unfortunate that they can use this fact to line their pockets.
