Ok here’s the scenario. You have a folder with well over 300 images that all need to be resized, lightened up and reduced in file size for the web. Doing this one at a time would take hours. You’d have Carpal tunnel syndrome before you’re finished. In this post, I’ll show you how to use Photoshop actions to batch process repetitive image tasks. Not only will this save your wrists, but it will also save your sanity and a huge amount of time as well.
If you’ve never used Photoshop Actions this will be a nice surprise that you were previously unaware of. There brilliantly easy to create and take no time. Follow the following easy steps to create your first Photoshop action today. You’ll be glad you did. Right…let’s go.
Writing your First Photoshop Action
For starters you’ll need to open the actions palette in Photoshop. To do this go to Window > Actions. This will open the palette in question. At the bottom of this panel are a series of icons. Click on the dog eared post it note to create a new custom Photoshop action. This will activate the red record button at the bottom of this palette. Once the icon turns red Photoshop will be recording every digital move you make. What you’re going to want to do here is the repetitive task that sits in your lap.
Notice in the Actions palette tab you’ll see a record of all the…well actions you have applied to your photo. It’s important to stay on task from here on out. Photoshop is recording every move you make so make all moves count.
Once you are done performing all of your action tasks your going to want to tell the Action palette you’re done with its services. To do this hit the stop button at the bottom of the palette. For all the Millennials out there this is the square button at the bottom of the palette next to the red record button…Or red circle.
Photoshop Actions the Batching Process
If this particular task is something you perform time and time again Actions can be saved for future use. They can even be backed up shared if this is a repetitive action you’d like to share with your team, but I will get into that in another post. For now let’s write your first action before traveling down the Adobe rabbit hole.
Photoshop Actions the Final Batch
After you’ve recorded the action you would like to batch all you need to do is assign what folder of images you want to pull from as well as what folder you’d like your newly processed images to be saved to. Once you hit ok you’ll see your screen performing all the actions you just recorded. If you’re ever approached with what seems to be an extremely arduous task keep this post in mind.
