If you’re looking for ways to increase blog traffic there are some pieces of information you should be feeding to the bots. This post is a companion piece to my previous article about the anatomy of an effective blog post. In my prior entry I show you how to write more effective blog articles by seeing what the bots see. In this post I’ll dive even deeper into meta tags that help better index your page by giving bots even more information about your topic. These tags will help you get better indexed not only in search engine results pages, but with social networks as well.

Must Have Meta Tags to Increase Blog Traffic

Meta tags lives in the body of a webpage and give the crawlers more information than what they pull from the content of your written article. Commonly known meta tags are description, keywords and author. The keyword meta tag has lost some relevancy in recent years thanks to spammers keyword stuffing the hell out of them. There are however some must have meta tags your page should be including that will help the bots and social networks spread your message.

Description Meta Tag
The first meta tag doesn’t require much explanation, but since it’s so important I’ll mention it first. Every post you put up should have a good meta description. This is what shows up in the search engine results pages so use it wisely. Make it interesting and be sure to include your target keyword while keeping it under 160 characters. Most search engines cut off characters after 155-160 so keep your description tight.

Robots Meta Tag
Another must have meta tag your page should have is the robots meta tag. This one tells the bots to index your post and any post linked to the page. One of the things bots use to define a niche as well as relationship is by the pages linked to the page they’re crawling. It’s a good idea to keep links on your page related to your topic in order to better define what your post is about.

Each social network displays social posts by a different list of criteria. The following meta information pertains to the big 3 social networks Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Use the code below to insure your social posts show up the in a way that is most beneficial to you. markup for Google+
This tag displays to Google+ what your site is called. If for some reason the network doesn’t pull from your page data this is what will show up as your title.

Again if Google+ doesn’t pull data from your already existing meta tags it will fall back onto this tag. It’s a good idea to write something that explains what your whole website is about.

Twitter Card Data to Increase Blog Traffic

Twitter accounts for a lot of website traffic to most people. Because of this you want to make the most out of what your posts look like to the popular social network. Once of the things to leep in mind is that more people click on tweets that include imagery. More so if the imagery is provocative or related to the post itself.

As a WordPress user I know that Twitter calls from my post’s “Feature Image”. This is the image assigned to the page itself. If for some reason Twitter doesn’t connect to my featured image I have defined a fall-back image that is more related to my entire website. This insures that if the page image isn’t pulled at least an image related to what my website is about is used instead. See the example below.

Twitter Card Data
Twitter card data can be set with a group of defined card tags. Below are the tags that should be included in your posts in order for them to display on Twitter in a way that will get the most amount of clicks possible.

Twitter Card Types

There are 4 Twitter card types. I use the “Summary Large Image”. See the following tweet to see why.

The 4 Twitter card types to choose from are:

  • Summary Card: Title, description, thumbnail, and Twitter account attribution.
  • Summary Card with Large Image: Similar to a Summary Card, but with a prominently featured image.
  • App Card: A Card to detail a mobile app with direct download.
  • Player Card: A Card to provide video/audio/media.


The following tag is for defining what image twitter displays if your page doesn’t have a defined feature image. Again it’s a good idea to make this graphic “Evergreen” in order for it to be most effective for posts with no featured image.

To see what tweets from your site or page look like try the Twitter Card Validator. This tool reflects what a tweet to your page will look like. From here you can determine how to best promote your post. As you’ll immediately be able to tell Twitter cards greatly improve the visibility of your tweets. You’ll have better control over what they look like when others tweet your posts and by adding a provocative image you’ll get more shares and re-tweets.
